Trip Summary
On this trip I was accompanied by two friends who also are military veterans,
Nilo a Navy vet and Jim an Army vet.
This was a fun walk down memory lane for me. I am a Vietnam veteran who served
in the US Navy aboard a service ship that supplied food to ships of the fleet
while at sea using an operation that is called underway replenishment or UNREP
as we knew it. One of the many ships we UNREPed was the USS Hornet while attached
to the 7th fleet in the Western Pacific or WESPAC.
Even though I did not serve on an aircraft carrier, much of what I saw on the
tour was very familiar, although things were bigger and in greater quanity than
we had on my smaller ship. I had been on a carrier only once before in the Philippine
Islands when I saw the 1962 Bob Hope Christmas show on the flight deck of a carrier.
As a result, even though much was familiar, there was a lot that I was seeing
for the first time.
My feeling is that everybody should visit military museums, around the country,
to gain a better understanding of how our service men live while on duty. For
those who served, it can be a visit with memories of past service.
I would like to thank docents Carl and Bill for giving us very informative
tours of the USS Hornet. It is especially nice to here stories of the ship's operations
from men who have lived the life of aircraft-carrier crew members.
