A Plan Comes Together
Fast forward to the year 2015. During the past few years, the subject of the P-51C would come up occasionally, however, it was still a “maybe someday” thing – until this year (2015). I had received a postcard in the mail advertising the return of the Collings Foundation aircraft coming back to Moffett Field in Mountain View, California.

When Lynn and I had dinner with John and Barb, I took my postcard with me. During the evening the conversation turned to my postcard and the fact the Collings Foundation aircraft were coming back to Moffett Field soon. John had also received the postcard about the "Wings of Freedom Tour." The natural direction for the conversation John and I were having was about the WW2 war birds coming to town.

John and I began to talk about flying in the P-51C when they arrived this time. I figured we both would get all excited about how fun it would be, but that it was too expensive. To my surprise John said, “Let’s do it.” I thought that John was kidding as usual until it became very clear that he was serious about going up in the little Mustang. I wasn’t about to become a “wet blanket” over the idea, so I said, “Okay.” With that we began making plans as to when we would take our P-51C flights.

It was decided that flying in the middle of the week would avoid weekend crowds. So now I’m getting excited and a little concerned about the high price for the flight. There were two lengths of flights offered. John and I both agreed that the shorter flight was probably best for the first time. We figured that if we liked it, we could take the longer flight the next time. Our next step was to call the Collings Foundation to make reservations for our flights. Once that was done all we could do is wait.

Each time John and I got together our conversations always came around to our upcoming flight in a P-51C Mustang fighter. We could only speculate as to how the flight would go. As the flight was almost upon us, I began to have second thoughts. I began to wonder if the plane had enough room for a guy my size. Then I became a bit worried about being claustrophobic in such tight quarters. I would hate to freak out in the middle of a flight.
