Getting there
The ferry ride from Cozumel to Playa del Carmen was a rock-and-roll ride that had nothing to do with a form of music. The Sea was choppy giving us a view of the horizon rising and falling. At its heaviest, the rolling caused the horizon to disappear completely below the bottom of a window with the horizon going up to 3/4 of the way to the top of the window. All the time the bow was going up and down. Even though I had experienced heavier seas in the U.S. Navy, this trip brought back memories of times I was aboard a liberty boat in choppy seas. I'm glad I'm not prone to motion sickness.

Once on land it didn’t take long to find our way to a tour bus in town. It was waiting for us among a group of other tour vehicles. After boarding the bus, we began a road trip that took longer than I expected – about one hour. Fortunately, our tour guide made the time go by faster by telling us about the history of the area we were traveling through. We learned more about the different areas in Mexico. For example, the Yucatán Peninsula has a slower, more laid back culture than that found around Mexico City. The highway was modern and filled with a lot of familiar looking vehicles. Ignoring the fact that most signs were in Spanish, it appeared as if we could have been in many places in the United States.
